If you like to stray off the trails and push the limits, here is some basic advice that will keep your Willys Jeep tires on the ground and your body safe inside the vehicle.
Basic Safety
Your Jeep needs to be in top shape before you challenge the terrain. That means you need to be sure the Willys Jeep parts are all well maintained. If you’re overdue for some basic maintenance, take care of this before you take the Jeep out.
Two of the most important systems to keep an eye on are your Willys Jeep tires and brakes. If the tires are worn they aren’t going to get good traction. This isn’t basic road driving and you’ll need to get a solid grip on tricky terrain. And if your brakes are a bit dodgy, the time to find out is not when you are on a steep downhill grade!
Make sure all your gear is safely stowed. You are going to be bouncing around quite a bit, and if a flying wrench or ice chest hits you in the head, it’s going to ruin your day pretty quickly. You should be firmly strapped down yourself. Though many people don’t like to admit it, the seatbelt is well worth the small amount of annoyance it may bring you!
Check The Terrain
It’s best not to venture into a new area blind. Instead, scout out the place you are going to go first. Ideally, you’ll want to walk it so you can get a handle on what hazards you are going to face. When you are walking you can pay closer attention to the obstacles and they won’t take you by surprise later.
Imagine the path your Willys Jeep tires are going to take. Are they going to bog down in that mud there? Get stuck in that crevice? Lose traction on a slick patch of rock? Taking a path six inches to the right or left might be the difference between making it and not.
If possible, talk to other drivers who have driven the area. Ideally you want to talk to other Willys owners since these tough little vehicles don’t have some of the luxuries and safety features modern Jeeps or other 4x4s do. However anyone who had driven these hazards can provide a few tips.
