Improvements in mechanical design have made frequent oil changes pointless. In fact, most automakers suggest having the oil changed every 7,500 miles. And keep in mind that these are the companies who want their vehicles to last.
#2 – Regular Radiator Flushes
Your father may have suggested having the radiator flushed a couple of times each year. And it was probably good advice when he gave it. But, times have changed; cooling systems are far more advanced today than they were 20 years. They don’t lose coolant like they used to. Plus, the chemicals that are used within today’s coolants are more effective, allowing them to last for a couple of years before needing to be drained and replaced. Your mechanic might suggest having the radiator flushed. But, check your owner’s manual first.
#3 – Keeping The Warranty Valid
Warranties are like life insurance policies: nobody enjoys reading them regardless how important they may become. The problem is that dealerships aren’t shy about lying to customers regarding how to keep the warranties valid. They’ll suggest (and sometimes, outright claim) that you must have regular services like oil changes performed at the dealer in order to prevent your warranty from becoming void. Be careful. While neglecting to have your filters and oil changed according to your owner’s manual can place your warranty in jeopardy, you don’t have to have them done at the dealership. You can do them yourself or at a local garage.
Because the auto repair industry relies upon drivers paying for recurring services, there’s an aggressive promotion to have maintenance performed.
