Mazda To Launch A New Green Line up

Author : Tony Hill

After initially stating that they wouldn’t be entering the ‘green motoring’ market Mazda have now done a u-turn and spoke about their plans to launch a new line-up consisting of both electric and hybrid vehicles

Mazda have suggested that the new hybrid line-up will consist of cars with both diesel and gasoline engines thus catering for a wider market The new cars are set to have improved fuel economy which will in turn save the customer money

The new ‘green’ line-up is expected to debut at the 2009 Toyoko Motor Show Mazda’s main aim is to offer affordable transport that is environmentally friendly and a ‘step ahead of current hybrid offerings’ – so it will be interesting to see the outcome

The new vehicles are likely to include the innovative stop-start technology and be far more aerodynamic as Mazda will try to save fuel wherever possible

It seems as though Mazda have finally decided that the green route is the one to take Initially there was a lot of apprehension when it came to ‘green cars’ but gradually people have become far more aware of the damage cars can cause to the environment and they seem to want to do something about it It also helps that green cars are fuel efficient and can save you money when it comes to running costs – especially in the current economic climate when we are all trying to stretch our money as far as possible

Another benefit of environmentally-friendly cars is that you will be paying far lower tax – so more money can be saved here too

One of the initial problems with green cars was their appearance – they weren’t the most attractive of cars, however car manufacturers really seem to have upped their game when designing ‘green cars’

Take the funky little Citroen C1 or the near-identical Peugeot 107 for example, both offer great fuel economy, fall into the low tax band and are good for the environment and on top of that they look good too – you can’t really go wrong!

These two cars have become more and more popular over the past few months and I for one have been noticing more of them driving through the town

It now seems as though Mazda are following their lead and hoping to break into the hybrid market Mazda have said also stated that electric vehicles will be introduced to their line-up by 2015 so watch this space!

What Are Tonneau Covers Made Of

Author : Ivar Rudi

There are many different styles and brands of tonneau covers that you can purchase for your truck Many times you will have the option of what you want and what you can afford for your vehicle It will depend on the make and model of your truck and what the options available are for that particular model You will have a great time figuring out what you want to have for your truck

There are hard material tonneau covers that you can get These are made of hard plastic and are very tough and durable You can get a lot of years from one of these covers They are made to keep the items that you have hidden underneath it protected You can usually find these covers to come with a lock This will make things even safer and secure when you cannot be in sight of your truck at all times

The hard tonneau covers are nice, but they can be costly If you are looking for something a little less expensive but still a good quality item, you may decide to have a vinyl cover These are very good for all different reasons The first being is that they serve their intended purpose and they are more affordable than the other style You cannot lock this type, but you can still keep things protected underneath the cover You will not have to worry about hauling things in the rain because the cover will keep the items underneath safe and sound

A vinyl tonneau cover will need to be maintained more than that of plastic When you have a vinyl cover, you will have to use a conditioner on it every so often to make sure that you are keeping the vinyl soft This is so that when you stretch the vinyl cover across the bed of the truck to close, it will do so nicely You do not want to have to worry about the cover ripping or tearing when you are trying to get it closed

Some of the tonneau covers will close by snaps; Velcro and some even have a track that it slides into All of the above ways are very useful and can be done easily with little effort You will not have to worry about the cover coming undone when you are driving down the road You can have confidence in knowing that your cover will be secure and stay in place

When you have a vinyl tonneau cover, you should be careful that you do not have anything that will puncture the cover underneath it If the vinyl is not taken care of, you may end up with a hole in the cover and you will find yourself trying to replace or fix the cover

1987 Chevrolet Blazer Faulty Door Latch

Author : John Bisnar

In 1991, Alex Hardy, 37, was driving his 1987 Chevrolet Blazer through White Hall, Alabama when the Blazer’s rear axle broke, freeing the right wheel assembly and sending the vehicle into a roll When the door flew open, Hardy was thrown 30 to 40 feet through the air and suffered severe injuries that left him permanently paralyzed

Attorneys representing Hardy filed suit against General Motors They alleged that the Blazer’s faulty door latches contributed to Hardy’s injuries, and that GM knowingly sold Blazers with defective door latches that opened in accidents like the one owned by Hardy

GM denied the allegations, arguing Hardy was to blame because he had been drinking and fell asleep when his Blazer rolled over Witnesses for GM testified that Hardy flew through a window because he was not wearing a seat belt GM insisted that their “Type 3″ door latch was safe and met all federal safety standards They further claimed that the rate of side-door ejections from its vehicles involved in fatal accidents was 77 per 100 occupants Finally, GM experts testified that Hardy’s door latch was only slightly damaged, indicating that it had not come open during the accident as he contended

“Once again, a giant automaker tried to avoid the facts by clouding the issue,” noted nationally recognized auto defects attorney, John Bisnar “Internal GM documents-including a 1982 study estimating such latches could fail some 18,000 times a year-underscored the faulty nature of GM’s Type 3 door latch This latch was installed on some 40 million GM vehicles beginning in 1978 An updated version featuring a support plate was only installed on some 1987 models Unfortunately, GM opted not to spend the estimated $916 million needed to replace all of the latches It chose instead to issue a ‘quiet recall’ where dealers were instructed to replace the latch without telling their customers Regrettably, there are still some 30 million vehicles on the road that are equipped with these latches ”

An Alabama jury awarded $50 million in compensatory damages for Mr Hardy and his family and $100 million in punitive damages against the automaker for what the jury determined was GM’s “guilty knowledge” of the defective latches This was one of the largest ever verdicts against GM

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began an investigation into what GM knew about the apparent defects in the door latches A former administrator of the Federal agency said it often took aggressive civil litigation like the Hardy case to unearth evidence and documents that were otherwise hidden from Federal regulators

“This verdict revealed the reprehensible fact that GM had known for at least 14 years that Americans would be injured and killed as a result of its poorly designed door latch, a part that had failed in accident after accident,” observed Brian Chase of the nationally recognized auto defects law firm of Bisnar Chase “Mr Hardy’s action in taking GM to court is an example of our justice system at work The jury award is America’s message to GM-in this case, quite a substantial message-that their failure to act was not acceptable Hopefully, this lawsuit will help convince the automaker to respond effectively to known safety defects to prevent further injuries to its customers ”

We extend our sincerest sympathies to Alex Hardy for all the pain and injuries he has suffered We wish him well

Can Your Car Be Saved From Fire Damage

Author : Aydan Corkern

We can be subject to all kinds of fire damages to our cars, and a lot of these kinds of fires are not caused by us You might have a fire because of the wires under the hood of your car, or you might get too close to another car that is already on fire You might have a wreck with another driver that will cause both of these cars to start a fire Never carry gasoline in your car or trunk as the fumes could overpower you and cause you to become so sick that you might cause an accident

If you smoke, the chances of you getting fire damage from this smoker increases with each time they light up or the number of passengers you might have in your car that smoke As the ashes from these cigarettes are still burning when they fall off of your cigarette, they will keep burning until they land, burning the seats of your car If you try to throw a cigarette out the window of your car and the back window is open, this thrown cigarette can be pushed back into the car by the air itself and settle into the back seat where it can smolder for hours until it goes through the cover of your seat and set the stuffing of the seat underneath on fire

Sometimes this kind of fire will let you know of its promise to start by letting off smoke signals It will make your eyes start to water or burn, and your nose will smell it because it will cause the inside of your nose to burn also You might also see the black smoke, and that will mean that the seat is in full fire, and you will just get out of the car and call the fire department to have them come over to put out the fire Usually by this time, your car is gone and the fire will totally destroy your car When the fire department does get there, they will only have to put out the shell of this car

If you should have a fire under the hood of your car from the wiring, you will need to just get out of the car Never open the hood because this will only give the fire air to live by climbing out of the window to keep the flow of air from going under the dash Call the fire department and hope that they get there in time so that you might still have a car that you can save

How To Build Your Own Electric Vehicle

Author : Kerry Ng

With the high price of gas these days, many consumers have decided that owning and driving an electric vehicle will be more efficient and cheaper to run over the long haul If you decided to build your own electric vehicle, there are plenty of resources available to help you understand and work through the process of converting a gas vehicle into an electric vehicle

If you are one of those unfortunate souls that have to commute a long ways back and forth to work, an electric vehicle may not suit your needs because on average these vehicles run from 30 to 70 miles each day Other factors such as the driving conditions, the weight of the vehicle and the quality of the battery will determine how many miles you can drive You also have to consider how you will be recharging the batteries If you live in your own home with a garage, then charging the batteries is not a problem However, if you live in an apartment complex with no garage, it maybe a little tougher to charge the batteries every night

Some Important Considerations

First thing you have to consider is what type of car you want to use to build your own electric vehicle Smaller cars would be more ideal, but bigger cars can be used as well You should also consider using a car that has a manual four speed or five speed transmission, since standards are more efficient than automatics Interestingly, since electric motors are so deficient, shifting gears up and down constantly won’t happen as much as it does in a gas fueled engine

When building your own electric vehicle, there will be additional weight added to your car That weight can be anywhere from 200 to 500 extra pounds Just make sure that the car you picked can handle the extra weight with the modifications and isn’t completely ridiculous and is well within reason

A few more things to keep in mind that are optional when building your electric vehicle is the power steering and air-conditioning The power steering would definitely require another motor to make the power steering pump work The air conditioning will put a huge drain on the batteries, but you can hookup the air conditioning using a special magnet system to work the compressor

In the end, there are plenty of resources out there to help you do the job right when building your own electric vehicle As time passes and with the rising cost of fuel, electric vehicles and hybrids will become more and more popular Chances are the price of gas is going to continue to rise and for a lot of people, gas is almost not affordable So going ahead and take a look at building your own electric vehicle; you may be surprised at how easy it is to convert your gas guzzler into and electric vehicle The money you will save on fuel will pay for the cost of the conversion in very short order and there will be less pollution in the air too

Ins and Outs of Auto Finance

Author : Christina Costa

There are several ways of saving money on your next car loan The easiest research you can do is right from your own computer By using the Internet, you might find that often times the best financing comes from non-franchise, independent financing companies

Usually they will offer the better deal to you, just so they can continue to compete with bigger companies Dealer financing is usually more expensive because they are using your credit rating while working with banks There is money to be made from the financing, sometimes even more than off the sale of the vehicle itself

Did you know by using your home equity that might be the best way to lower interest payments? Typically, a home equity line of credit and a home equity loan will provide lower rates than traditional car loans This is simply because they are secured against the value of your home You can even itemize the interest on your federal tax return and it will be tax deductible

A HELOC usually has the lowest interest rate in the beginning, just be cautious since the rate is variable This will leave you open to the possibility of payments increasing if the rates do as well This is considered the better option if your loan is looking at 36 months or less in length

Anything over that, a fixed-home rate equity loan is ideal This has a guaranteed rate for the entire term and would be the best financial choice Always keep in mind that you are using your home for collateral, so make sure that you never miss a payment

Watch out for zero interest loans This might sound appealing, but not if you are giving up a substantial rebate If you decide to finance and take even a 5% rebate that could add up the savings over a time period on your loan, better than taking the zero interest in the beginning

Consider increasing the down payment toward the vehicle The idea of no money down sounds good, but usually you will make up for that within a year of car payments It might be better to hold off on the purchase until you can save more for the down, which will help you to save a lot more money in the long run

Take a look at your credit report and know your score before entering a dealership There might be errors that could hurt your rating when the dealer runs a check If you have time to work on your credit score, hold off on the purchase Take care of unpaid credit card bills that might be negatively impacting your score

Lenders take into account your credit score and their rates are a direct result from them If you improve your credit, you might be able to get a better rate

Car payments have been made affordable for many people through leasing, where you are not paying the complete purchase price for the car There are online calculators that can help you compare the best auto loans

A monthly lease payment is usually less than monthly loan payments Some new cars can be leased for as low as $200 a month, some for even less Unfortunately, through leasing you lose any resale value once the lease is up If leasing works for you, watch out for specials if you want the best deal As with any contract, read the terms and conditions surrounding your lease before you sign

Make sure to completely read the terms of the lease and know whether the advertised monthly payment includes sales tax and fees If you are paying a larger than average down payment to secure the lower lease rate, take that into consideration as well A lease is the best choice for someone who is not fiscally sound

Know when it is considered the best time to buy a car Fall is the season when auto makers would like to get rid of their older models, to make way for the new Auto financing rates can be reduced greatly if you purchase at the right time of year Financing a car is sometimes the only way possible for the purchase to be made

Make sure you completely understand your loan and how much you are going to be responsible for There are good deals to be found, just keep in mind the ins and outs of auto finance so you will get the best financing rate possible towards the purchase of your vehicle

Sport Cars Modified by Technology for Higher Performance

Author : Gregory Smyth

A sports car can be referred to as an automobile specifically intended for performance driving Almost all sports cars are rear-wheel drive, possess two seats, two doors, and are intended for accurate handling, acceleration, and aesthetics A sports car mainly aims at high-class road handling, braking, maneuverability, low weight, and high power, and not passenger space, comfort, and fuel saving

Sports cars come under either luxurious or spartan, but the compelling aspect is the driving mechanical performance Drivers consider brand name and the related racing reputation and history as important pointers of sporting versatility, but some brands, even though they do not indulge in racing or constructs racing cars, is also widely respected

A car may be classified as a sporting automobile even if it is not a sports car Performance alterations of common, production cars, such as sport compacts, sports sedans, muscle cars, hot hatches and other cars similar to these generally are not sports cars, still share characteristics owned by sports cars Sometimes, performance cars of all compositions are classified as Sports cars, or, often, as performance cars

A sports car does not need a big, powerful engine, even though a lot of them do have them Some traditional sports cars do not possess powerful engines, but were popular for excellent handling because of its light weight, a well-engineered, balanced chassis, and modern suspension On complex and compressed roads, automobile like them achieve more efficiency than a heavier, more powerful luxury car with less flexibility

As a result of North American safety regulations, a lot of sports cars are not in the market for sale or use in the United States and Canada In the United Kingdom, Europe, and the Middle Eastern market (e g UAE), an adjustable attitude towards small-volume specialist manufacturers has helped companies to flourish The drive train and engine layout decide the handling features of an automobile, and is the core to the design of a sports car

For sports cars of any generation the front-engine, rear-wheel drive train layout (FR layout) is common This configuration has lasted the test of time longer in sports cars compared to mainstream automobiles For achieving of better handling and weight distribution, other formats have been developed The RMR layout is a commonly feature seen only in sports cars – the motor is centre-mounted in the chassis (nearer to and behind the driver), and supports only the rear wheels High-performance sports car and supercar manufacturers always show a liking to this layout A lot of modern cars, specifically grand tourers, also employ a FMR layout, with the motor placed between the front axle and the firewall

Only a few manufacturers still employ the rear-engine, rear-wheel drive layout (RR layout) The motor has well spread out weight across the wheels, and this delivers exceptional traction, but is not advisable, as the engine’s weight is not between the two axles; the vehicle is badly balanced, thus, many early vehicles handled errantly However with the continuous modifications to the design, added with the engineering developments and support of electronic driving i e computerized traction-stability control, the manufacturers have been able to fight against inherent weaknesses in the design Sports cars continue to be an irresistible attraction for car fanatics all over the world

As one of the world’s most exciting and prestigious brand, Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong offers luxury passenger cars and commercial vehicles extensive choice of Vito, Sprinter, Viano, Actros, Axor and Atego to the customers in Hong Kong and Macau.
