One might wonder why GM didn t just give up and forget the Corvette The sales records were certainly poor In 1953 54 only 3,940 cars were sold And 1955 was even worse In that year only seven hundred Corvettes were sold

However, there were several reasons why GM kept on One, and perhaps the most important, there were people in GM who believed in the Corvette And these believers were in high places Another is that GM was afraid of losing face And finally, Ford had introduced the T bird and GM needed to compete So GM continued to pursue the Corvette And in 1956 57 GM succeeded in making the Corvette a true sports car when they gave it power and handling reliability

The Corvette than continued into a distinguished career It won the Motor Trend Car of the Year Award in 1984 and 1998 The Corvette made Car and Drivers Top Ten List with the C4 from 1985 to 1989; the C5 in 1998 and 1999, and the C6 from 2005 to 2008

The Corvette was the pace car in the Indy 500 on ten occasions So it went from obscurity to success thanks to the vision of some GM executives and the work of Arkus Dukov
