Alternative Fuel Vehicles A Review of Hybrid Hydrogen Electric E85 Biodiesel and CNG Vehicles

Author : Taylor Turnstone

Alternative fuel vehicles are automobiles that are powered by fuels other than gasoline There are many alternatives that are now being used and tested in order to decrease our dependency on fossil fuels Some examples of alternative fuel vehicles include:

Hybrid – Hybrid vehicles are powered by both a combustion engine and an electric motor Advanced technologies for hybrids include regenerative braking, assisted power generated by the electric motor, and the process of powering down when idling Hybrid cars are one of the most popular alternative vehicles on the market today

Electric – These vehicles use an electric motor and electric controls instead of the internal combustion engine Some advantages to the electric car include very low maintenance and zero emissions Electric cars also do not give off as much noise pollution as a normal car Some disadvantages include limited travel distance before having to recharge and slow acceleration

Hydrogen – Hydrogen vehicles convert hydrogen to power through either a modified version of the internal combustion engine, currently available on the market today, or via hydrogen fuel cells which are still in development Some obstacles in the development of hydrogen fuel cells is cost, fragility of the cell itself and poor performance in freezing temperatures

CNG (Compressed Natural Gas)- CNG vehicles run on compressed natural gas as opposed to gasoline This kind of car is more environmentally friendly than a gasoline vehicle, and when compared to all the other alternative methods, is the safest One complaint of CNG vehicle owners is the large fuel tank compared to that of conventional gasoline tanks, which limits trunk space

Ethanol (e85)- E85 vehicles are powered by ethanol, a fuel made from corn and other natural products These vehicles release no fossil based carbon dioxide One disadvantage of this type of fueled car is that it is can be very difficult to start in cold weather However, there are cold conversion kits on the market today that can eliminate this problem Some people have simply added a couple gallons of gasoline to the tank prior to the cold season to eliminate the problem as well

Propane – Propane vehicles are powered by propane fuel instead of gasoline These vehicles are up to thirty percent less expensive than conventional gasoline vehicles to operate Propane was approved by the 1990 Clean Air Act as an alternative fuel, and vehicles powered by propane produce thirty to ninety percent less carbon monoxide than gasoline engines

Biodiesel – Vehicles that are powered by biodiesel are very similar to diesel vehicles in operation except for the fuel itself Biodiesel vehicles can run on a combination of natural oil and an alcohol such as ethanol or methanol or exclusively on waste vegetable oil, from restaurant fryers or other food industries

Limited petroleum sources combined with rising gasoline prices and consumer demand will encourage vehicle manufacturers to produce and develop alternative fuel vehicles These vehicles, in the long run, will reduce transportation costs as well as benefit the environment

Tricking Car Dealers

Author : Brenda Williams

One of the most useful skills that people can take with them as they get older is being able to outwit a car dealer, that is beat the most cut throat bargainers at their own game So I hope to give ten different ways that you can try and do so, and in doing so end up ahead of the game with the best price possible

The first is to take as long as possible, because car sales people get paid usually from commission the longer you take the more desperate they become to get you off the lot Once you get their business card make sure that you always request the same salesman so that you are literally wasting his time until it becomes less costly for him if he simply gives you a good deal This can be accomplished in a couple of ways, mainly if you leave and come back often; remember you should always try and make it seem like you are attempting to do him or her a favor by hinting that "you want to keep working with him so that someone else doesn’t get his commission" etc, so he stays hungry, thinks you are serious, and doesn’t want to give up on you

Next you should try to know everything that they know, understand how their loans work and how they are going to try to get you to finance the vehicle so that they can’t pull a fast one over you

Third, act like you know nothing you should be the unknowing unsuspecting driver who is just coincidently making all the right moves to lower the price of the vehicle Do not let them get the "high penny" if something cost 40099 99 you can pretty much guarantee that they are using that extra 99 99 to increase them to the next tier of commission so if you can keep them from getting it you can often get the price to go even lower

Negotiate hard, but don’t lose focus on the larger issues to something that costs a few pennies compared to the other areas where you could force a better deal Sixth don’t let them get extras onto the contract like touchups or rust proofing which cars don’t need any more

Seventh figure out what the factory incentives are for the dealer and try to save money by shaving off price without taking away too much of that incentive Eighth always avoid rushing into a deal, they might be motivated to sell, but never go to quickly Ninth bring a friend who can help you act as a duo, you can be the desperate fool who is willing to pay top dollar for a car while he is the sensible and responsible one who won’t let you settle without a good deal

Finally you have to be careful of any financing deals they try to get you to go for, figure out what you want to do before you even decide to buy the car, because financing is one of the easiest ways for you to get ripped off

3 More Of The Latest Car Technologies For The New Year

Author : Everette Jamison

Recently, we explored a few of the new features that automakers have begun developing for their vehicles Each of them has already been introduced into the 2009 models (mostly in those with higher price tags) Rolling hotspots, adaptive cruise control systems, and lane warning alerts offer a new level of convenience and safety for drivers Today, I’m going to describe 3 more of the latest automotive technologies that promise to improve your experience behind the wheel

#1 – Blind Spot Cameras

Bigger vehicles are saddled with larger blind spots Even mid-sized sedans have blind spots that are significant enough to cause collisions Now, imagine the inherent danger that someone on a motorcycle faces when he or she is next to an SUV

Car manufacturers are designing systems in order to compensate for blind zones The latest technology positions small cameras inside the casing of the side-view mirrors The cameras monitor the areas around the vehicle that are normally obscured from the driver’s view If the driver attempts to change lanes or make a turn when an object is identified within those areas, an alarm is sounded Volvo’s blind spot systems include visual alerts that appear in the front windows

#2 – Collision Control

You might remember from my last column that adaptive cruise control systems try to adjust your speed in order to prevent colliding with the vehicle in front of you Collision control systems work under the same principle Sensors are installed within your car that can identify the position and rate of approach of objects outside your vehicle If a collision is imminent, the system will alert you

For example, if you’re traveling faster than another car that is in front of you, the collision control feature will monitor the distance between you and the other car If it senses that the space between you both is closing too rapidly, it will flash a warning light or sound an alarm

#3 – Thermal Imaging

While your car’s headlights are critical for driving safely during the evening, their reach is limited At high speeds, it’s possible to encounter objects in your path without having sufficient time to steer clear Mercedes-Benz and Acura offer a thermal imaging feature within some of their models Not only does the technology allow you to see further down the road, it can also identify objects that are moving as well as their direction

Improving Safety Standards

The 3 technologies that I’ve described in this article are focused upon improving the safety of drivers and their passengers By using cameras to monitor blind spots, sensors to prevent potential collisions, and night vision technology, automakers are helping to ensure the safety of everyone on the road

As with any new technology, they’re being introduced within high-end vehicles first Over time, as the costs to produce these systems decline, car manufacturers will begin installing them into their lower-end models For most of us, that means a few years will pass before they’re widely available

The Relationship Between People and Cars

Author : Brenda Williams

A TV is an inanimate object that provides entertainment A can opener is an inanimate object that provides accessibility to food A train is an inanimate object that moves large groups of people And so it would follow that a car is an inanimate object that provides individual transportation No way Insofar as its relationship to people is concerned a car is in a class by itself

Marshall McLuhan certainly had some understanding of this back in 1964, when he wrote in Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man the car has become an article of dress without which we feel uncertain, unclad, and incomplete in the urban compound It is certainly arguable that the person who does not own a car, who walks, bikes or takes the bus, feels uncertain, unclad, and incomplete At the same time, for people who own them, cars do provide an emotional balm unrelated to their function of transportation

And this is reflected in car purchases People do choose the cars they buy for practical reasons such as fuel economy, safety, and price At the same time, emotional factors such as vanity desires play a strong part in car selection A car is personalized People name their cars People attribute emotions to their cars such as obstinacy when they refuse to start And now there is even some scientific research to support the fact that people personalize their cars

Vanderbilt University and the University of Colorado at Boulder conducted a study as to how our brains process faces and pictures of cars It was found that people view cars with the same area of their brains that they view other people s faces

And if they have to identify cars and faces at the same time they experience a conflict

Another study was conducted at the University of Vienna to determine how people view cars They found that one third of the study participants linked a human or animal face with ninety percent of the cars People who looked at the Classic 1957 Chevy Bel Air perceived the headlights as eyes and the air intake/grille as a mouth When given emotions and characteristics such as powerful, arrogant, angry, masculine, and dominant, the participants agreed overall as to the cars that had these traits

The study also found that the most popular cars exuded power and were described as angry, arrogant, masculine, dominant, and mature by both men and women

And it is not just the car that arouses emotional responses but also some parts of the car One important part is cup holders According to a professor at Duke University and a cultural anthropologist, we experience the interior of our automobile on a subconscious level Therefore, how a car feels to us is important Cup holders evoke a feeling of comfort and this can be the first item that prospective buyers look for Plus prospective buyers can be positively influenced by the number of cup holders the car has

So characteristics such as color, power, overall appearance, styling, and performance are important not for their intrinsic value but for the overall feeling they give the driver/buyer And quite often, this feeling will over ride such practical considerations as fuel economy, durability and safety

Advantages of a Hybrid Car

Author : Albert TAY

With a proper introduction to the operation of a hybrid car automobile and an explanation of the energy saving benefits that can be enjoyed through car ownership, the advantages of hybrid car operations will be realized and ultimately understood Thus, before buying a car, a hybrid car especially, it is import ant to discuss and find out more about the many nice advantages of Hybrid car performancewith friends and family

The hybrid version of automobiles offers the customer an interesting assortment of engine features that are supplemented with power options through the use of electrical motor and battery participation These engine features are not available in every hybrid automobile currently being sold at automobile dealerships or through private sales in society today The hybrid engines are equipped with gas powered, or dual powered engines, as well as an electrical motor that renders power support when needed There is a heavy duty battery that serves as a source of power as well

Within the hybrid breed of automobile engine varieties, there is a mild hybrid category and a full hybrid category While each of these categories contain the same equipment, the performance of that installed equipment can cause your automobile to operate on entirely different principles The mild hybrid category consists of a gas powered automobile engine that serves as the propulsion mechanism to move your automobile down the street

Paired with this gas powered automobile engine is an electrical motor, as well as a heavy duty battery that are snuggly connected throughout the engine maze of pipes and mechanisms that when energized can provide propulsion to move your automobile forward The hybrid car engine is the only source of propulsion power in the mild hybrid engine model, and the electrical motor remains in standby mode to provide spurts of energy and power to aid the gas powered engine in passing vehicles on a highway or wherever else a sudden surge of power will be of benefit

The full hybrid category consists of a gas powered automobile engine that is considered the propulsion mechanism as well as an energy saving device An electrical motor and a heavy duty battery are also part of this full hybrid engine power force The gas powered engine works hand in hand with the electrical motor to provide the necessary boosts of energy to cause the car to propel through traffic When the car is stopped at a traffic light, the gas powered engine will cease to operate, and the electrical motor will take over in providing propulsion power for the car to move from the site Once the car achieves a good level of speed, the gas powered engine in the hybrid car will automatically engage and cause the car to continue down the street under gas engine power The heavy duty battery is continually charged by the electrical motor at the same time

The energy savings are accumulated during the different stops and starts that the vehicle might experience as the automobile moves toward its destination Whenever the gas powered engine is not engaged there is a cost savings realized in its lax state of operation The hybrid motor is quite capable of consuming energy and generating the right amount of power at the same time These moments of non-engagement will save the consumer money in gas cost every time the automobile is driven down the road

In conclusion, there exist more logical advantages of owning a hybrid car which is an unstoppable growing trend and unconfrontational facts
